Q & A
I. Common Q&As for Application
Q: What is the difference between the Dual Degree Program and the Combined Undergraduate/Graduate program?

In the Dual Degree program, after spending two years in SJTU and approximately another two years in UM with a return back to SJTU to complete all program requirements for two different programs, students will receive two different bachalor degrees from SJTU and UM respectively. Requirements: Good GPA standing, English Proficiency Certificates (TOEFL, MELAB or IELTS) and other application materials.

In Combined Undergradute/Graduate Program (CUGP) program, after finishing their undergraduate program requirements in the JI, students get their bachalor degrees from SJTU and then directly go into a master programs in UM. After finishing all the requiremtnts for UM Master programs, they can obtain Master degrees from UM. Requirements: Good GPA Standing, TOEFL, and similar supportive materials needed in Dual Degree program.

Q: Is it okay to submit an application even though I¡¯m not sure if I want to go to UM?

Feel free to do the online application even if you are not 100% sure that you would go to UM. However, do think about it carefully before you make that decision. If you decide to withdraw at any time, please let JI representatives know. You should also understand that your application may affect some of your peers' decision. We realize that there may be financial or family reasons when you are making your decision, but we wish that you take the applications seriously.

Q: Will applications be reviewed by the department related to the chosen major or the transferring recruitment office?

It will be decided mostly by the departments, but when there are students at a border line or a gray area, the two departments will work together to make the decision.

Q: Can we apply for several majors during the application?

You can only apply for one major during the application process, but you can indicate at the end of the form your 2nd and 3rd major choice.

Q: Is there any requirement for specific courses when applying to certain majors? E.g. If I apply to Computer Science Engineering, will the score in C++ be considered as more important than others£¿

The departments will not look closely to specific courses at the undergraduate level.

Q: Do we need to take any English course at UM?

If you have met the requirement for English proficiency at the time you apply, you are not required to take any English course at UM.

Q: Can we drop the offer if we are not satisfied with the major we are enrolled for?

Yes.

Q: Is there going to be a waiting list when you release the admission?

There is no waiting list.

Q: Can we get a list of the courses that could be transferable?

You can check online on our webpage. We have a database for courses that are transferable from JI. We are going to evaluate most of your courses.http://www.engin.umich.edu/transferdatabase/college.jsp?id=1931

Please also see the following link for transferrable SJTU courses:

Q: Which will carry the most weight in the application material?

The GPA definitely carries the most weight if you reach the minimum requirement in English proficiency.

Q: Do we have to fill the GPA score in the application form?

No, you do not have to write down your GPA score.

Q: What is the difference between the cumulative GPA and the GPA for the core courses?

Core courses are courses in math, science, and engineering.

English, humanities, social sciences and foreign language are counted in the cumulative GPA. Both GPAs will need to meet the minimum requirements.

Q: What is the amount of money required to be stated in Financial Support? Is that okay if the sponsor is not the parents?

The estimated cost for two semesters for 2008-2009 academic year is $49.903 (it changes on a yearly basis), paid semester by semester. The assessment is done with the highest possibility in cost in order to be more easily approved when applying for a visa. The sponsor must be closely tied with the student.

Q: How about the online application fee?

The online application fee for JI applicants is waived by UM Office of Recruitment & Admissions. The JI representative will distribute the waive code to JI applicants at a proper time.

Q: We know that the University of Michigan receives applications from around the world, will the applications from the JI students be reviewed separately?

The UM views JI as a partner school and sister school. They know about the JI professors and courses therefore your application will be reviewed separately.

Q: Can I use stocks or funds as my financial support documents?

No, it must be money you have direct access to.

Q: If I am admitted to the dual degree program, does that give me the advantage to apply for the CUGP?

No, at this moment the students will be reviewed separately for the CUGP.
