1. Do students at the Joint Institute study alongside regular students at UM and SJTU? What is the level of interaction between them?

JI students take their own specially-designed courses, which are taught in English. Unless a JI student registers for a class offered by another School at SJTU, he/she will not be studying with SJTU students. In addition, the Joint Institute has its own set of dormitories for its students. However, there are many opportunities for social interaction with SJTU students at various campus activities.

JI students study and live with UM students during the summer semesters, when UM faculty and students come to Minhang campus for JI's annual Teach/Study Abroad program. JI students who are admitted to the 2+2 Dual Degree program go to UM's Ann Arbor campus in the United States to take UM College of Engineering courses and live with fellow UM students.

2. Do students of the Joint Institute enjoy the same privileges as other regular students at UM and SJTU ie. clubs, sports, and facilities?

Yes, JI students may enjoy all the privileges of SJTU student life. International students should note that most of these activities are conducted in Chinese. JI also has its own student organizations, some of which interact with other SJTU clubs, particularly for intramural sports.

3. What are the average GPA, SAT, ACT and/or TOEFL scores of the accepted applicants?

Because the Admissions Office accepts both Chinese nationals and international students for the same education program, we have different criteria and requirements for each set of applicants. Applications from international students are based on a comprehensive review of students' application essays, test scores, high school transcripts, and extracurricular life.

4. Do you require any AP exams or SAT subject tests, or offer any credits for good scores?

For native English speakers, we require scores for the SAT and/or ACT. Non-native English speakers should submit either TOEFL, IELTS, or English SAT/ACT scores to demonstrate their proficiency in the English language.

Though the JI does recognize and review AP scores, we do not award any credits for them.

5. How do I apply?

The Admissions Office does not currently accept online applications. Prospective students must complete the Admissions application form and submit all required documents requested by post, preferably in the same delivery via express mail. The Admissions Office will confirm by email message the receipt of any application materials.

6. What other programs does JI offer?

There are a number of challenging engineering Exchange and Study Abroad programs for our enrolled students. The JI also hosts a popular Summer program for Univ. of Michigan students, which provides engineering courses and internship opportunities with multinational companies operating in Shanghai during the summer semester.
