Welcome to the JI Admissions Office

The first class to enroll at the UM-SJTU Joint Institute matriculated in 2006 with a total student body of 192. In the latest round of admissions (2008-2009), the Joint Institute will accept 400 students for enrollment. With its emphasis on academic rigor, global education, innovative thinking, and a rich extracurricular life for students, the Joint Institute is able to select the best and brightest high school seniors for enrollment.

Apply to the Joint Institute

English is the primary written and spoken language for both technical and general lecturing in all of JIs offered courses, and all admitted students are expected to show an above-average proficiency in English when they arrive. Application requirements differ for Chinese and International students. A standard JI application form, high school diploma and transcript, financial statement form, as well as relevant standardized test scores (SAT, ACT, TOEFL, etc. where applicable) are required in both groups.

Non-Chinese students applying from abroad may send their applications to the JI Foreign Students Admissions Office directly.

Chinese students first gain acceptance from Shanghai Jiao Tong University before going on to apply for admission to the Joint Institute.

Admissions Timeline

For International students: Admissions are rolling; the Admissions Office accepts applications from November to June every year for matriculation in the Fall semester only. Deadline for applications for admission in Fall 2008 is June 10, 2008.

For Chinese students: Students must take the high school entrance exam, and follow the admissions guidelines of SJTU. A number of qualified students will be reviewed in a 'pre-admission' round of tests held at SJTU in the winter of each year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I transfer to the Joint Institute?

As a general rule, the Joint Institute does not accept transfer applications. Due to an extensive required core curriculum designed to match the University of Michigan College of Engineering undergraduate degree, students accepted to the Joint Institute must begin as freshman (first-year students). Applications for transfer to the JI will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
