The Joint Institute welcomes applications from students living outside of China. JI offers students interested in studying in China an opportunity like no other -- a chance to live and study in an English-language environment, following the academic standards of a world-class institution praised for its educational and research achievements, the University of Michigan College of Engineering, with the resources and highly reputable pool of Engineering talent from one of the top universities in China, Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

International students interested in the Joint Institute should consider the following question:

How prepared are you to study and live at a Chinese university? Although all of the courses offered by the Joint Institute are taught in English, outside studying and recreation time may naturally be held in Chinese. Students with some Chinese background or interest in learning Mandarin may adjust to student life with the most ease.

That said, JI emphasizes a culture that is internationally aware and open to diversity. International students can enroll in Mandarin Chinese courses, and all JI students have a number of excellent opportunities to spend time abroad, either in 4-week sessions during the Winter Break at University of Michigan's Ann Arbor campus or Berlin's Technische Universitat, or in one of our Dual Degree programs (2+2 Dual Bachelor's or 4+1 Bachelor's and Master's) offered by our parent universities, the University of Michigan and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
