The UM-SJTU Joint Institute is an undergraduate college devoted to the study of Engineering. Currently, the education program offers two majors: Mechanical Engineering and Electrical/Computer Engineering.

The education program is built on a common science and engineering core. In the first three semesters, all students receive rigorous instruction in math, physics, chemistry, computer programming and basic principles of engineering. These courses have been designed to match the core curriculum required by the University of Michigan's College of Engineering.

Students who choose to complete the first two core curriculum years at JI and then apply to transfer to UM for the remaining two years of their undergraduate studies may choose from 15 engineering established by the UM College of Engineering. See the STUDENT HANDBOOK ONLINE for more information.

Mechanical Engineering Electrical / Computer Engineering
The Mechanical Engineering program provides students with an excellent foundation in the core technical competencies of the discipline: thermal and fluid sciences, solid mechanics and materials, and dynamics and control. Built upon these strengths is a very strong focus on the application of these technical abilities through a design and manufacturing sequence. In addition, an array of technical electives enables students to tailor their mechanical engineering education to best suit their career goals.
The Electrical and Computer Engineering major is a new interdisciplinary program supported by the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) Department at the Univ. of Michigan and the Electronic Information and Electrical Engineering (EIEE) School at SJTU. Through generous exposure in the computer lab, students explore the most recent analytical techniques and technological developments in their field.

What undergraduate study opportunities are currently offered to students applying to JI?
The Joint Institute currently offers only undergraduate engineering studies in the following engineering degree options:

1. The 4-year Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree from SJTU. We currently offer two engineering majors for those students who choose to complete their entire engineering degree here at JI (SJTU) ¨C Mechanical Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering.

2. The Dual Degree program option allows students to graduate with dual majors, one from UM and one from SJTU (either ME or ECE major). This program requires two years core curriculum study at JI and the final two years further studies (in the chosen major) at UM. Interested students apply for admission to UM in their 3rd semester of their sophomore year at JI. Admission is not guaranteed, but based on their performance in the first year and a half at JI. See the STUDENT HANDBOOK ONLINE for more information.

3. The Combined Undergraduate/Graduate Program (CUGP) option, where students study 4 years at JI and then apply for admission to an engineering Master's program for 1 year of study.
