The UM-SJTU Joint Institute (JI) is jointly sponsored by the University of Michigan (UM) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). With a commitment to building a world-class engineering institution, the JI is being launched with high expectations and a strong commitment from both partner universities and the Chinese Government. It has been given a high degree of autonomy to model itself on world-class universities such as the University of Michigan. Curriculum structure and most teaching materials are adapted from UM and over 40% of the courses will be taught by professors from UM as well as other world-class universities.

UM-SJTU Joint Institute offers both undergraduate and graduate education that is unsurpassed in quality, depth and scope. For the purpose of giving student a broader and more solid preparation for different engineering fields, the Joint Institute offers a common engineering core curriculum for the first 3 semesters, which enable students to continue their further study in different engineering fields at both UM and JI. Students could apply to any of the 15 programs in the College of Engineering at UM or any of the following programs offered in the Joint Institute.

Normally, it will take four years to complete all the required course work and a graduation thesis for a Bachelor of Engineering degree. For the course work, students need to complete a total of 140 credits, out of which 128 are adopted from the UM curriculum requirements and others are used to satisfy the mandatory requirement of SJTU.

1. The Joint Institute and UM will jointly offer a dual-degree program for qualified international students who could spend 3 years at the JI and another two years at University of Michigan to get two bachelor degrees from the two top universities.
2. The Joint Institute and UM will jointly offer a sequential graduate and undergraduate study program for qualified international students who can spend 4 years at the JI and another year in Ann Arbor to get a bachelor degree from SJTU and a MSc. degree from UM.

An applicant who
either has graduated from a recognized high school or is on his/her junior year
of high school can apply for admission. Interested applicants should visit the
admission websites of the JI or School of International Education, SJTU.
Applications can be done either online or by paper.
There
are no special entry exams for admission We look for eager, highly engaged
students who will bring a high degree of intellectual energy and creativity to
the JI, and who have taken a reasonably challenging course load, selecting from
among the most demanding courses available to them.
1. The JI has two semesters a year, a Fall semester, running from early September to middle of January and a Spring-Summer semester from early April to middle of August. We only admit new students in the Fall semester.
2. Application and Admission is on a rolling basis, it will start in November and continue until the end of June.
3. Applicants need to submit the following materials
a) Program Application
b) An Essay and Personal Statement
c) Standardized Test ( ACT or SAT for English native speakers and TOEFL or IELTS for others )
d) Counselor and teacher recommendations are required. The high school counselor should also attach a copy of the student’s transcript and the school’s profile sheet to the recommendation form.

1. The tuition for 2007-2008 academic year is 50,000 RMB (about 6,173 USD).
2. Living Expenses (Room, Board, Medical Insurance) for 12 months is about 16,000 RMB.
3. Limited scholarships and assistantships are available on a merit basis.
Student Exchange and Summer Programs [back to the top]
Globalization has been recognized as a common requirement of higher education. Considering its population, potential influence on world economy as well as political structure, China has become one of the most favorable places for international students to conduct their international education program.
One goal of the Joint Institute is to serve as an international education base for students worldwide. It offers a variety of opportunities for international students coming to China to study, experience different life and culture, as well as attend industry internships with multi-national companies.

The Joint Institute has many distinguished features to benefit students from our partner universitis[1]:
l Using English as its official language removes the language barrier for most international students;
l Curricula are designed and approved by the UM for seamless transfer and integration that minimizes the problem of course recognition and credit transfer;
l Large number of the classes are taught by faculty from UM and other leading universities guarantees an effective global learning environment;
l Different levels of Chinese language and culture courses are available;
l A fine-tuned Spring-Summer semester which overlaps with summer sections of most universities worldwide, offers students flexibility for adjusting their study abroad period;
l Compare to study at their home universities, students will be able to save some money by participating in this program due to the lower cost of living in China.

Besides the students from partner universities, other international students can also join the summer program offered by the Joint Institute. In the last two years, more than 90 students from UM have spent 6-10 weeks here for course study and/or summer internship. At the same time, 25 UM faculty members delivered 20 courses for the summer program.
Starting from 2007, the Joint Institute will open the program to all international students. Interested applicants can apply for the program by submitting applications on the website of the Joint Institute. Many
multi-national companies have their research laboratories, development centers
and manufacturing factories in Shanghai. They provide thousands of internship
opportunities for top students worldwide. Check the website of the Joint
Institute for updated internship information.
4. Application Dates and Required Materials: [back to the top]
For partner universities, program fees are handled according to their agreements with JI. Qualified students from other institution can enroll directly in the Joint Institute for short-term study or summer program and will pay regular JI tuition.

For exchange students, tuition is normally waived according to the agreement set by JI and its partner universities. For summer program and short-term study, the current tuition is 25000 RMB per semester.
