  1. 2018 JI Open Day and Summer Design Expo held successfully

    The University of Michigan- Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint institute’s open day on the occasion of 2018 summer Design Expo was held at the Minhang Campus of SJTU on August 8. More than 500 students and parents from home and abroad participated in the activities to see JI’s outstanding students and extraordinary achievements first hand.

    Dean Peisen Huang made a comprehensive introduction of JI from aspects of its development, faculty, students and courses to visitors.  He pointed out that JI has achieved fruitful results in aspects of international cooperation and talent training, by adhering to the philosophy of “internationalization, interdisciplinarity, innovation and quality.” In addition to the dual-degree program, JI jointly launched “Global Degree Pathway” programs with top overseas universities, for the purpose of leading the next-generation global degree education reform and establishing more diversified international education platform. After 12 years of development, JI has successfully cultivated a batch of leading talents in the fields of education, business and industry.

    Deputy Party Secretary Scott Yang shared financial support resources of JI with students and parents. Sticking to the “student-centered” policy, JI offers students extensive financial aid opportunities. In addition to scholarships funded by the State government, Shanghai government and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, JI also established scholarships and grants including the John Wu and Jane Sun Scholarship Series, the Yu Liming Endowed Scholarship, the Tang Jun Yuan JI Scholarship, the Jackson and Muriel Lum Endowed Scholarship, in order to enable students to enjoy high-quality education resources and achieve all-rounded development.

    More than 80 innovative student projects were displayed on the show, of which 27 are Capstone design projects sponsored by 18 leading companies including Bosch, Panasonic, General Motors, Intel, Rockwell Automation, United Automotive Electronics, Logic Solutions, Didi Chuxing, Giti, ZPMC, Shanghai Electric, and SHFEILI. The design projects are from a number of summer experimental courses such as “Introduction to Engineering, ”Design and Manufacturing 3,”“System Design and Implementation” and “Undergraduate Research Project.” The semi-annual design expo is an all-round display of JI students’ innovative achievements.

    In addressing the closing speech, Party Secretary Xinwan Li said the design expo as a brand event of JI aims to establish a platform of cooperation among students of different majors, a platform of communication between JI and communities, a platform of joint research between university and enterprise.  He hoped the attending students and parents can have face-to-face talks with JI students, to have a good understanding of the innovative, liberal and international learning atmosphere of the institute. Meanwhile, he welcomed the attending high school students to join JI in the future to become leaders embracing feelings of nation and country as well as international vision, providing positive contributions to the development of the human beings.
