  1. Tang Jun Yuan JI Scholarship established at SJTU

    The signing ceremony for Tang Jun Yuan University of Michigan- Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI) Scholarship, donated to SJTU by Shanghai Tang Jun Yuan Education Foundation, was held at SJTU’s Xuhui campus on June 27, 2015, attended by the foundation’s board director Henry (Yingnian) Tang and key officers, SJTU President Zhang Jie, and JI Dean Peisen Huang. SJTU Vice President Ansheng Zhang officiated.


    Tracing the long charity history of the Tang family’s education foundation, President Zhang Jie thanked Henry Tang and his family for their strong support for SJTU. Briefing JI’s achievements in the past ten years, Zhang reassured that JI would make even more progress as the beneficiary of the Tang foundation’s generosity.


    As a UM alumnus, Mr. Henry Tang remarked that he is fully confident about JI’s future development as a result of the successful partnership between UM and SJTU. He is very pleased to set up the Tang Junyuan JI Scholarship to help JI dual-degree and SGUS (Sequential Graduate Undergraduate Program) students complete their studies at UM and return to serve China. He emphasized his family’s long tradition of valuing education and helping excellent students to succeed. He hoped to make further contributions to SJTU in the future.

    According to the agreement, the Tang Jun Yuan JI Scholarships will be awarded to JI excellent students who are in the JI-UM dual-degree program or JI-SGUS.

    Shanghai Tang Jun Yuan Education Foundation was established by Mr. Tang Xiangqian, a famous patriotic overseas Chinese and his family, in the name of his father, former Shanghai CPPCC Vice Chairman Tang Junyuan, a famous patriotic businessman. The foundation provides education supports, scholarships and donations to charity and social development.

    Shanghai Tang Jun Yuan Education Foundation has had deep ties with SJTU. In 1992, the foundation set up Jun Yuan Scholarship to provide long-term financial assistance to freshmen at SJTU and other famous universities, which is still going on today.

    Mrs. Tang Yau Suk Yan, wife of Xiangqian Tang and mother of Henry Tang, is a famous alumna of SJTU and always cares about the development of her alma mater. In 2011, she set up the SJTU Tang Yau Suk Yan Scholarship and has been donating 200,000 RMB annually to support outstanding students.

    Henry Tang is a famous alumnus of UM. Impressed by the accomplishments of JI and carrying on the Tang family’s long tie with SJTU, he again donated to establish the Tang Jun Yuan JI Scholarship.
