Academic Strength

To develop itself as a world-class university, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) has established a comprehensive, strategic partnership with the University of Michigan (UM) in international cooperation. The two parent universities are committed a world-class academic research and educational institution. Joint Institute models itself after top US research universities in terms of academic environment, faculty quality, focus on advanced fundamental research, exclusive publication in international journals, international collaboration, and graduate program guidelines. JI faculty members come from elite universities from around the world. All of its tenured professors are recognized by the Chinese government’s 1000 Scholar Program. Two majors are offered: mechanical engineering (ME) and electrical and computer engineering (ECE).

As a testing ground for international higher education and aiming to cultivate creative future global leaders, the JI adopts a similar educational system as UM, including  faculty dual appointment, credit transfer, joint degree programs, curriculum development, student evaluation, and all–English teaching. It has made breakthroughs in faculty recruitment, innovative talent training, and administrative system. The JI model has received significant attention among US higher educational institutions and has become a role model in international education cooperation between China and the US.
