Application Procedures and Criteria

1.    Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact faculty members directly regarding research opportunities and expectations. The evaluation of individual faculty is an important part of the admission process.

2.    Applications will be reviewed once all the relevant materials are received. Admission is determined by:

  • Academic record  for all universities an applicant has attended.
  • Recommendations from three faculty members who have supervised your coursework or research.
  • Statement of  Purpose for your graduate study objectives.
  • Personal statement  of any special circumstances you would like us to be aware of (optional).
  • Your performance in an interview process, including evaluation of English proficiency.

For the M.S. program, refer to the normal admission procedure specified by the Graduate School of SJTU. For the Ph.D. program, the Joint Institute reviews applications on a continuing basis as applications are received. Applicants should allow at least six weeks for application processing before contacting the JI about their submitted application.

1. Please fill in Examination Registration Form on the website, download and print it. Prepare all  the materials needed in accordance with the list of applicant materials, put  them in one PDF file (called Ph.D.+ Name), and send them to in both hardcopies to  Graduate Program Office

2. The expert panel of JI will review the materials and notify the qualified applicants to a second interview in JI.

3. Foreign language ability, professional ability and comprehensive quality will be tested in the second interview. Meanwhile the following materials are needed:

(1) ID card;

(2) The original document of Master Degree and Academic Certificate(for fresh graduate, the Graduate Student ID are needed, for those who get his/her master degree from abroad, certification issued by the “ministry of education service center” are needed).

(3) The original certificate for CET-6.

4. After the second interview, the name list of qualified applicants will be published online. Then the Admission Notice will be delivered.

5. Quasi admitted doctoral student can choose spring or fall semester on condition that he/she has obtain a master’s degree before admission.

 Applicant   qualification 1.  Junior undergraduates (graduating in   2013).

2.  Those with excellent academic records   in the top 20% of the department during the past 3 years or with   extraordinary performance (such as publishing papers in well-known journals).

3.  Excellent English proficiency.

1. Those with Master Degree from domestic key universities (including C9, 985 and universities graduate school), or in key national disciplines, or top universities from abroad.

2. Certificates of English proficiency, such as CET-6, GRE, and TOFEL(CET6 ≥425 or TOEFL(new)≥90 or TOEFL(old)≥600)or IELTS≥6.0)

1.  Summer Camp Application form.

2.  Academic transcripts and proof of class ranking (certified by the academic department) in a sealed and certified letter.

3.  Certificates of English proficiency, such as CET-6, GRE, and TOFEL.

4.  Other proofs of performance (such as copy of published papers, awards, and certificates).

5.  Two recommendation letters from associate professors and above in the student’s department (sealed and signed).

6.  Personal statement and resume.

3.Hardcopy of Master degree and Academic Certificate(copy of Graduate Student Identity Card for fresh graduate, and bring the original in second interview)

4. Academic transcripts and proof of class ranking (certified by the academic department) in a sealed and certified letter.

5. Certificates of English proficiency, such as CET-6, GRE, and TOFEL(CET6 ≥425 or TOEFL(new)≥90 or TOEFL(old)≥600)或IELTS≥6.0)

6. Personal statement and resume.

7. Two recommendation letters from associate professors and above in the student’s department (sealed and signed).

8. Abstract and Catalog of Master Thesis

9. Other proofs of performance (such as copy of published papers, awards, and certificates).
