International Graduate Student Admission
To develop itself as a world-class university, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) has established a comprehensive, strategic partnership with the University of Michigan (UM). These two parent universities are committed to develop a world-class academic, research, and educational institution called the Joint Institute (JI). JI models itself after top US research universities in terms of academic environment, faculty quality, and focus on advanced, fundamental research. The graduate program at JI is similar to those found in top-tier research universities in the US; it emphasizes international collaboration and exclusive publication in international journals. JI faculty members come from elite universities from around the world. All of its tenured professors are recognized by the Chinese government’s 1000 Scholar Program. Two majors are offered: Mechanical Engineering (ME) and Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE).
To educate creative future global leaders, JI adopts an educational system similar to that found at UM, including faculty appointments, and all-English teaching. JI has made breakthroughs in international faculty recruitment and innovative talent training and administration system. The JI model has received significant attention among US higher educational institutions and has become a role model in international education cooperation between China and the US.
The class of 2011 has achieved remarkable accomplishments. Almost all of the senior students who applied for graduate programs overseas have received Master and Ph.D. admission offers from world-class universities, some have won scholarships. Twenty one students went to JI graduate school and other national top graduate schools. For the students who choose to start working after graduation, most of them have been recruited by domestic key enterprises and multi-national companies, such as Shanghai Volkswagen, Guangzhou Honda, State Grid, Peugeot Citroën, Schlumberger, Deloitte, KPMG, PwC, and many others.
Major Research Clusters
JI offers a world-class faculty: all faculty members have Ph.D. degrees from top universities, and many have years of experience working in renowned universities and international companies. JI is characterized by a multi-cultural and international atmosphere: many foreign students, faculty, and staff create a unique environment that fosters international education and cooperation. Graduate students are encouraged and helped to participate in international conferences, short-term study abroad programs, and international research projects.
JI offers research opportunities in the following areas: dynamics, mechanical engineering, optical engineering, material science and engineering, electronic science and technology, information and communication engineering, control science and engineering, computer science and technology, dynamic engineering, and engineering thermo-physics.
The goal of the master program is to train professionals to perform research and solve problems in their field of interest. JI not only provides students with comprehensive knowledge and skills, but also develops their abilities to conduct research in various engineering fields. The program provides rigorous science and engineering education that emphasizes both breadth and depth. It strengthens students’ knowledge in math, science, and engineering, to provide a solid basis upon which research skills are built.
The goal of the Ph.D. Program is to develop world-class innovative leaders who can work in international universities and research institutes. A Ph.D. degree is given in recognition of a student’s outstanding knowledge and innovative capability in a specific field. JI encourages cutting-edge research, and emphasizes disruptive technologies and paradigm-shifting approaches. It seeks cooperation with research projects in government and industry to achieve international impact. It also encourages international cooperation and exchange, through short-term study abroad programs or participation in international conferences.
JI cooperates with SJTU’s School of Mechanical Engineering, School of Electronics, Information, and Electrical Engineering, School of Information Security Engineering, Med-X Research Institute, School of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and the Research Institute of Micro/Nano Science and Technology.
One third of JI’s faculty members have industrial experience. JI also has close cooperative relationships with many world-famous companies. JI is partner with many international enterprises, including Delphi, General Motors, General Electrics, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, National Instruments, Schlumberger, Tenneco, Covidien, Bosch, and Nippon Chemi-con.
JI has close research collaboration with University of Michigan, Harvard University, University of California, Berkeley, and Oxford University.
All JI students are working as teaching or research assistants and receive a monthly stipend.
