University of Michigan - Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute

Undergraduate Admission (for International Students)

The University of Michigan – Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU Joint Institute) welcomes applications from students all over the world. The Joint Institute (JI) offers students interested in studying in China an opportunity like no other— the chance to live and study in an English-language environment at  Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), one of the top universities in China, while following the academic standards of a world-class institution, the University of Michigan (UM), of which the College of Engineering is praised for its educational and research achievements, resources, and highly reputable pool of engineering talents.

Although all of the courses offered by the Joint Institute are taught in English, there are ample opportunities to immerse in Chinese outside the classrooms. Students with an interest in learning Mandarin or with some background in Chinese may adjust to student life with the most ease. JI emphasizes a culture that is global and diversified. International students can enroll in Mandarin Chinese courses, and all JI students have a number of excellent opportunities to study abroad.  They may participate in 4-week sessions during the winter break at the University of Michigan’s Ann Arbor campus, Berlin’s Technische Universitat, or other international exchange programs, or the Dual Degree program or the Sequential Graduate/ Undergraduate Study (SGUS) offered by the UM and SJTU.
