JI Scholarships

 The JI Scholarship for Champions

This scholarship was jointly established by the UM-SJTU Joint Institute (JI) and the University of Michigan (UM) for outstanding students whose scores of National Entrance Examination rank number one in their provinces (municipalities). Without participating in the JI-UM dual-degree program, the winning students receive the full scholarship of 50,000 RMB annually, with the maximum of 200,000 RMB for four years. If the winners participate in the dual-degree program, the scholarship will cover two years of full tuition at JI and two years of full tuition at UM, which total more than 700,000 RMB.

The JI Scholarship for Encouragement

This scholarship was established by the Joint Institute as a need-based scholarship for outstanding students whose scores (excluding bonus points) of National Entrance Examination rank top 150 in provinces with more than 500,000 exam taking students, top 100 in provinces with more than 300,000 but fewer than 500,000 exam takers, and top 50 in provinces (municipalities) with fewer than 300,000 exam taking students. Depending on the families’ financial situation, students may apply for the scholarship ranging from 10,000 to 40,000 RMB annually, with the maximum amount of 160,000 RMB for four years.

The John Wu and Jane Sun Endowed Scholarship for Outstanding Students

This scholarship is sponsored by entrepreneur & investor John Wu and his wife Jane Sun, the donors of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) John Wu and Jane Sun Endowment Fund, to reward students who select JI as their first choice and whose scores (excluding bonus points) of National Entrance Examination rank top 100 in provinces with more than 500,000 exam taking students, top 50 in provinces with more than 300,000 but fewer than 500,000 exam takers, and top 30 in provinces (municipalities) with fewer than 300,000 exam taking students. Winning students will receive the full scholarship of 50,000 RMB annually, with the maximum total amount of 200,000 RMB for four years.

 The John Wu and Jane Sun Endowed Scholarship for Excellent Students

This scholarship is sponsored by entrepreneur & investor John Wu and his wife Jane Sun, the donors of the SJTU John Wu and Jane Sun Endowment Fund, to reward students who select JI as their first choice and whose scores (excluding bonus points) of National Entrance Examination rank top 5% among students being admitted by SJTU from their provinces. Winning students will receive a scholarship of 20,000 RMB, with the maximum amount of 80,000 RMB for four years.

The Yu Liming Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship is sponsored by entrepreneur & philanthropist Liming Yu and his wife Xiaomin Zheng, the donors of SJTU Yu Liming Endowed Scholarship Fund, to reward excellent JI students, with priority given to need-based financial aid. Applications are open in each fall semester and assessed based on applicants’ academic performances and financial needs. Winners will receive a scholarship ranging from 10,000 to 40,000 RMB annually, with the maximum amount of 160,000 RMB for four years.

The John Wu and Jane Sun Sunshine Scholarship

This scholarship is sponsored by entrepreneur & investor John Wu and his wife Jane Sun, the donors of SJTU John Wu and Jane Sun Endowment Fund, to reward excellent JI students, with priority given to need-based financial aid. Applications are open in each fall semester and assessed based on applicants’ academic performances and financial needs. Winners will receive a scholarship ranging from 10,000 to 40,000 RMB, with the maximum amount of 160,000 RMB for four years.

The John Wu and Jane Sun Blastoff Scholarship

This scholarship is sponsored by entrepreneur & investor John Wu and his wife Jane Sun, the donors of SJTU John Wu and Jane Sun Endowment Fund, to reward excellent junior and senior students of JI. Applications are open in each fall semester and assessed based on applicants’ academic performances and overall capabilities. Winners will receive a scholarship ranging from 20,000 to 40,000 RMB, with the maximum amount of 80,000 RMB for two years.

The Tang Jun Yuan JI Scholarship

This scholarship was sponsored by Shanghai Tang Jun Yuan Education Foundation to help outstanding JI dual-degree students complete their studies at the UM. Candidates should demonstrate excellent academic performance, outstanding overall capabilities and strong leadership. Winning students receive a scholarship of 125,000 yuan, with the maximum amount of 250,000 yuan for two years.

The Jackson and Muriel Lum Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established at the UM by patriotic overseas Chinese entrepreneurs Jackson and Muriel Lum on their golden wedding anniversary to reward excellent JI-UM dual-degree students, with priority given to need-based financial aid, helping them complete their studies at the UM. Depending on financial needs, winners receive the scholarship in the amount between 5,000 to 20,000 USD annually, with maximum amount of 40,000 USD for two years.

The Cheng Family Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established at the UM by economist Mr. John Cheng and his wife Jean Zhang, the donors of The Cheng Family Endowed Funds, to commemorate his family’s long-standing relationship with the UM and SJTU. The scholarship aims to support high-achieving JI-UM dual degree students to complete their undergraduate studies at the UM, with priority given to need-based financial aid. The winning students receive the one-time scholarship of 2,500 USD.

The Roger King Scholarship

This special scholarship was established by Chinese American entrepreneur & philanthropist Mr. Roger King for the UM College of Engineering (CoE) to help excellent JI-UM dual degree students complete their undergraduate studies at CoE of UM.

The Bosch Scholarship

This scholarship is sponsored by the Bosch Group (China) to reward excellent JI students with good character and academic performance, with priority given to financially challenged students.

The KLA-Tencor Scholarship

This scholarship is sponsored by KLA-Tencor Corporation (Shanghai) to reward outstanding JI master and doctoral students, encouraging them to work hard and grow into professionals with global visions.

Besides the above-mentioned scholarships, JI students can also apply for National Scholarship, Shanghai Scholarship and various kinds of scholarships and grants from SJTU and JI, including other merit and need-based scholarships and overseas exchange scholarships etc. Note that one student cannot receive more than one scholarship from the same category.
