Current Research Directions: |
We develop miniature probes and
resolution-enhancement algorithms
for photoacoustic imaging, and
explore its biomedical and
industrial applications.
Photoacoustic imaging is able to
visualize optical absorption
contrast, which renders the imaging
technology powerful for various
applications. By utilizing low
ultrasonic scattering, photoacoustic
imaging enables deeper penetration
in biological tissues at high
spatial resolutions compared with
existing optical imaging
technologies. On the other hand,
compared with ultrasound imaging,
photoacoustic imaging can reveal
rich information associated with
absorption contrast. Besides
photoacoustic imaging, we also
develop novel optical imaging
systems such as time-gated
fluorescence imaging, and explore
applications in cell imaging and
early detection of cancer. Please

Photoacoustic imaging of lithium
metal batteries |
|
|
A novel photoacoustic imaging technology
is explored to potentially reveal
lithium dendrite growth process, a
critical issue leading to short circuit
and even explosion of lithium metal
batteries. The results suggest that
photoacoustic imaging can be a powerful
tool to provide the insight into the
formation of dendrites through
high-resolution, high-contrast, and
three-dimensional visualization of
lithium protrusions. The work
demonstrated herein may open up new
avenues for the investigation of the
safety hazards of lithium metal
batteries.

Biophotonics.World: Miniature Probe
for Photoacoustic Imaging |
|
A research team at Shanghai Jiao
Tong University, China has developed
a miniature probe for photoacoustic
microscopy (PAM). The probe, as an
embodiment of PAM, is small and
light, which may facilitate various
potential clinical applications in
future. Imaging of mouse ear in vivo
using the probe has been
demonstrated in the article
published in Journal of Biophotonics

Miniaturization of optical- and
acoustic-resolution photoacoustic
microscopy scan head for scalable
resolution and depth in endoscopy |
|
Recently, a team of researchers led by
Professor Sung-Liang Chen from the
University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao
Tong University Joint Institute
developed a miniature probe capable of
both OR- and AR-PAM. They utilized a
gradient-index-lens fiber and a
multimode fiber to deliver light for OR
and AR illumination, respectively. They
aspired to achieve scalable resolution
and depth in endoscopy using their novel
miniature probe and high-quality in vivo
images comparable to those acquired by
the current bulky counterparts...>>link

Optical‐resolution photoacoustic
microscopy and endoscopy are powerful
tools for medical imaging. However,
implementation of the imaging heads or
miniature imaging probes with high
resolution and long working distance has
been technically challenging. The novel
design of using double gradient‐index
lenses for light focusing and a fiber
Fabry‐Perot ultrasound sensor for sound
detection provides a simple approach to
implement such a miniature imaging
probe.
