University of Michigan – Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute – 上海交大密西根学院

To develop itself as a world-class university, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) has established a comprehensive, strategic partnership with the University of Michigan (UM). These two parent universities are committed to develop a world-class academic, research, and educational institution called the Joint Institute (JI). JI models itself after top US research universities in terms of academic environment, faculty quality, and focus on advanced, fundamental research. The graduate program at JI is similar to those found in top-tier research universities in the US; it emphasizes international collaboration and publication in international journals.

To educate creative future global leaders, JI adopts an educational system similar to that found at UM, including faculty appointments, and all-English teaching. JI has made breakthroughs in international faculty recruitment and innovative talent training and administration system. The JI model has received significant attention among US higher educational institutions and has become a role model in international education cooperation between China and the US.
